It took a while, but we’ve got it finally for review on ChinaTechToday: the Xiaomi Mi6. Xiaomi’s latest flagship with Qualcomm’s MSM8998 Snapdragon 835 chipset and a impressive 6GB of RAM. Packaging

The Xiaomi Mi6 comes in the usual white box, with only a white logo on the front and the specifications on the back. When opening the box, the phone is immediately visible. The front of the phone comes with a temporary screen protector. Under the smartphone, some accessories can be found: a bumper , a Chinese manual, Chinese plug, USB Type C cable and an adapter for those who really misses the 3.5mm headphone.

Design and building quality

The first thing you will notice when looking at the Xiaomi Mi6 is the lack of a 3.5mm audiojack. A choice that we have seen at brands like Apple and Samsung. That said, let’s take a look at the design. In our opinion the Xiaomi Mi6 is one of the most beautiful phones on the market. With the curved glass on the front and thanks to the 2mm slim bezels on both side, it looks like it’s melting into the rear just gives it an impression that its out of one piece. Furthermore on the front there is a 8 megapixel selfie camera placed, the earspeaker, sensors and a (white) notification LED. Below the display a fingerprintscanner is placed that works under the glass body which responds lightning fast and illuminated sensor keys to operate the device. On top there is only an infrared port placed, while on the bottom you will find an USB Type-C port, mic and stereo speakers. On the left a SIM card slot has been placed, which can not been used for memory expanding though. On the right the volume rockers and power buttons are placed.

Concerning the building quality the Xiaomi Mi6 has an excellent build quality and feels firmer than the Xiaomi Mi5S. With a weight of 171 grams and a size of 145x71x7.5mm the phone lies very comfortable in the hand and is easy to operate. Although the building quality is excellent, we are still a bit concerned about the body. The body can be slippery which means you must be very careful to avoid letting it fall it into pieces.

Hardware

The owner of the Xiaomi Mi6 will be spoiled with its hardware. The Snapdragon 835 chipset with 6GB LPDDR4X RAM and the Andreno 540 GPU makes the smartphone lightning fast. The Xiaomi Mi6 also comes with 64 or 128 GB of UFS storage. So a lot of storage of your media won’t be a problem. The storage is, again, very fast during operation. To bad Xiaomi has chosen to disallow memory expansion by MicroSD, but believe us it really takes a while to fill the internal memory completely.

As said the Xiaomi Mi6 is lightning fast and this is what we see also in the Antutu benchmark. The Xiaomi Mi6 scores above a very high 169000 points. With the setup of the Xiaomi Mi6 we can run high demanding apps without any problems and are the best to find in an Android device at the moment.

The 5.15 inch IPS display of the Xiaomi Mi6 is just beautiful, it has a FullHD resolution of 1920×1080 pixels, offers a pixel density of 428 pixels per inch and has a high brightness of 600cd/m². The display has a very nice viewing angle and the display is very sharp. The display has a good contrast and de color representation is accurate. Although the Xiaomi Mi6 does not have Gorilla Glass, the display seems to be scratch resistant.

The battery of the Xiaomi Mi6 is a 3350mAh battery and performs very well. With intensive use we managed to use the phone for 1.5 – 2 days with a display-on-time of 6-7 hours. Charging times of the included adapter are not quite impressive as it took the Mi6 more than 2 hours to full charge. When we used a Quick-charge 3.0 adapter the score was much better, it was charged in a bit more than one hour.

Connectivity

The Xiaomi Mi6 has a wide range of connectivity options, unfortunately it really depends on your provider and the used network bands if you can use 4G. On our setup we tested with Dutch providers T-Mobile and KPN and we had no trouble at all with T-Mobile, but KPN had some troubles with it’s performance outside the big cities.

The Xiaomi Mi6 supports the following bands:

2G/CDMA1X / EVDO (BC0)
GSM 850/900/1800/1900MHz (B5/B8/B3/B2)
3G/WCDMA 850/900/1900/2100MHz
FDD-LTE 850/900/1800/2100/2600 (B1/ B3/ B5/ B7/ B8)
TD-LTE 1900/2300/2500/2600MHz
TD-SCDMA 1880-1920MHz
TD-SCDMA 2010-2025MHz

The calling quality is just great, no hickups, errors etc. Just a clear crisp sound. The earspeaker has also a crisp and clear sound and has a good volume. Concerning the GPS, the Xiaomi Mi6 performs great. The GPS has a quick fix and pointed the correct location on Google Maps thanks to the GPS/A-GPS/Glonass/BDS(BeiDou Navigation Satellite System) configuration. Other connectivity features include Wifi 802.11 A/B/G/N/AC 2.4GHz/5GHz and Bluetooth 5.0 which all performs as expected.

Camera

The Xiaomi Mi6 features a Sony IMX 386 sensor with optical image stabilization as well as a Samsung S5k3m3 sensor with a permanent double zoom. There is nothing to complain about the photos taken by the Xiaomi Mi6 in daylight, the dual camera setup performs great. Details can be seen everywhere and the color-authenticity is very good. As soon as there is less light, the Mi6 starts to increase the ISO value which results in image noise. Talking about recording videos, the camera supports 4K and 1080P videos with 30FPS. The best part, it features Optical image stabilization which guarantees a vibration reduction during your recording. Again, the recorded videos look very good during daylight recording, unfortunately just like shooting your photos in lowlight the video quality suffers here too.

The software integration is also focused on two cameras, as you can easily switch between 1x or 2x zoom. The double-zoom images as the bokeh shots turn out pretty well, the blurred background is mostly perfectly isolated from the sharp objects. The double-zoom shots (the butterfly photo below) give you sharp and accurate images.

The photos are optimized for this blog, the real the photos are bigger in size and file size

Photos can of course also be taken with the 8 megapixel selfie camera. The device features, like the Mi5s, a 110 degree wide-angle camera. The colors are very good, the photos have a lot of detail. Overall the photos are not really to complain about, although the white balance is too high in some situations, in the dark it’s not that detailed as the rearcamera and it got some noise. The frontcamera can also record videos in Full HD

Software

The Xiaomi Mi6 is Xiaomi’s first device running on Android Nougat along with MIUI 8.2. And it’s not perfect, yet. Sometimes there are small haps and stills despite the processor, RAM and GPU. Fortunately Xiaomi has already pushed out some OTA updates to fix some of the problems already. Our review device comes with a custom ROM which has already Google Apps preinstalled. Please note, if you get a device with a Chinese ROM you won’t have the GAPPS preinstalled, but it can be easily installed by following our tutorial.

The user interface of MIUI is just as we know it, very colorful and a lot of extra useful features like dual-apps and the possibility to adjust a lot of settings. The design can also be changed by using the pre-installed Xiaomi Theme Store. Of course, at least our review device from CECT-Shop, was virus and malware free.

Conclusion

What can we say, the device just looks awesome and feels awesome. Is it all awesomeness you get? Certainly no, the software has still some flaws but is getting stable more and more thanks to regular updates by Xiaomi. Also a con is the smoothness of the phone’s body, the use of the included bumper case is a must to avoid big damage after it slips out of your hand. Concerning the hardware, the device is fast thanks to the Snapdragon 835 chipset and the 6GB of RAM setup and gives you a lot of smooth operation happiness for a couple of years. The display is very good and the photos in daylight taken by the Xiaomi Mi6 are definitely the best we have seen out of Xiaomi device. Although to low light photos could be better. Overall a great phone to have that, eventually after some updates, won’t dissapoint you.
