The Xiaomi Mi Sport bluetooth headphones is an earhook headset which are connected by a short string. The headset has Bluetooth 4.1 and is IPX4 certified. We ordered this headset at CECT-Shop for € 29.99 and will be used for workout purposes. So what can you expect for this 30 euro headset? Is it as good as the other devices by Xiaomi? Let’s find out.
Packaging and delivery
This order took only 7 days to arrive from China into The Netherlands and was shipped by (paid) trackable Airmail. The headset was, like any other Xiaomi device, packed in the known white minimal package with the Mi logo and a plastic window at the front and on the back the necessary information about the device. There is nothing to complain about here, everything is well packed. Next to the Mi package, CECT included a small gift to it: a Phone stand.
So what’s in the box? In the box you will find:
- the headset itself
- a (chinese) manual
- 8 extra tips (4 per ear) to fit the headset better in your ears
Too bad we are missing a pouch or case to store/ protect the headset.
The headset has the sleek design like we have seen from Xiaomi before and it just looks great. The headset is IPX4 certified which means it’s splash and sweatprotected. You can NOT use it in the water. The earpieces themselves have a metal side, surrounded by a matt black, rubber-feel coating. The design of the earpieces are the same design as the beacon of the Mi Band 1 and Mi Band 1S. On the right earpiece there are two buttons to manage the volume and a LED is placed in the beacon. The flexible part is thickened and flexible as well and has a metal tip at the end. Thanks to the flexible hook it is easy to fit the earpiece in your ear. The earpiece eventually ends up into a rubber string that goes to the other earpiece.
The string between the two earbuds is about 45 centimeters long and has a tie to adjust the headset tighter or loser around the ears and your head. Around 10 centimeters below the earpiece a black remote has been placed with one button that can be used to switch on and off the headset, activate the microphone for calling an to pause/ play your music.
On the right earpiece there is a (protected) Micro USB port to charge the headset. Overall a very neat and very classy looking headset.
The Xiaomi bluetooth features dynamic drivers for the lower and mid tones where the metal composite diaphragm is for the high tones. The sound quality is pretty impressive although when listening to EDM or dancy poptunes it misses some bass in our opinion. The sound loudness is okay, but with high tones it can hurting your ears. So keep the volume in mind to save your ears. Overall the sound is well-balanced.
A great pro of the headphones is how well it performs with the sound of your surroundings. Although the headphones don’t have active or passive noisecancelling, the headphones can filter a lot of these sounds. A very pleasent pro in our opinion.
The headphones also have a mic placed in the remote control. The sound that it produces is good, our voice came over very clear to the other side.
The workout test
Of course we have tested the Xiaomi Mi Sports bluetooth headphones during one of our workouts. The fun starts with switching the headphones on, a friendly woman voice tells in Chinese it’s connected and we started our workout. The device supports Bluetooth 4.1 and has a range upto 10 meters. This gave us a enough moving space without losing any signal.
The earhook fits well and wears very pleasant. The headphones stayed in place while lifting, running and cycling. Also the sound was as expected, a minimum leak of surrounding sound and despite the loudness I used other people where not annoyed by my music. During the workout of 2 hours the headphones where still charged for about 50% while having the volumelevel on 50-60%. Speaking of the battery, a full charge will take about 2 hours to give you a usage time of 5 hours while listening to music.
For us it was a very pleasant experience during the workout.
With a price of around €29 euros (at CECT-Shop), the Xiaomi Sport Bluetooth Headset has a relatively small price for bluetooth sport headphones. Besides the comfort is very good, both build quality, sound quality and battery life are just fine too. The audio playback is generally pretty good, not excellent, but it lacks some bass at times. Despite that, it’s still a recommended product to use during workouts.
